Truck 3D Scan Cost: Buy a File, Measure by Hand or Hire a Scanner?
Our files for these vehicles
For a bumper, rack or canopy on a common truck, a ready-made scan file is the cheapest start: our full vehicle files cost $80 to $110, against published service rates of roughly $1,200 to $4,000 a day for on-site scanning and about $800 to $1,900 for a handheld scanner you run yourself. Measuring by hand costs nothing but misses curved surfaces. A service or your own scanner wins when no file exists for your truck, or when you need your own modified vehicle as it is.
Quick answers: what does a truck 3D scan cost?
- Ready-made file of a stock truck: $30 to $110 in our shop. Single parts and front or rear sections are $30 to $65, full vehicles $80 to $110, and STEP CAD files of the Ford Ranger Next-Gen $80 to $90.
- Scanning service, on site: published rates run about $1,200 to $4,000 per day plus travel, and one service puts a whole vehicle at $2,000 to $10,000 or more once the CAD work is included (sources below).
- Scanning service, by the hour: service bureaus quote about $100 to $300 per hour of scanning, before processing.
- Your own handheld scanner: dealer prices for the blue laser handhelds sold for car work sit around $800 to $1,900, before a computer that can process the data.
- Measuring by hand: a tape, a level and a straight edge cost almost nothing; the cost is your time and the surfaces you cannot measure.
Which option fits which job?
| Option | Upfront cost | Best for | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ready-made scan file | $30 to $110 per file in our shop | A stock truck that is already in a catalog | The scanned truck’s trim, cab and market must match yours |
| Measuring by hand | Close to nothing | Flat mounting faces, bolt holes, frame widths | Curves, panel gaps and clearances are guesses |
| Scanning service | About $1,200 to $4,000 a day on site, or $100 to $300 an hour | Your own modified truck, or a truck nobody has scanned | Travel, processing and CAD conversion are often extra |
| Your own handheld scanner | About $800 to $1,900 for the scanner | A shop that scans many trucks | Learning time, a strong computer, and the cleanup work |
When is a ready-made file the cheaper choice?
When the truck you design for is stock or close to it, and a file of the same generation, cab and market exists. One full vehicle file costs less than an hour of most scanning services. You get the whole truck at once: body panels, frame and underbody where the file includes them, in millimetres at 1:1.
Check three things before you buy, because a cheap file of the wrong truck costs the most of all:
- Generation and market. A “2022 Ford Ranger” can be three different trucks. Our Ford Ranger years guide and the generations pages give the years by market.
- Cab, bed and trim. A Wildtrak front is not the same as a base model front; a crew cab bed is shorter than a single cab bed.
- What the file shows. A file with the factory bumper on hides the mounts behind it; a file with the hood closed has no engine bay. Each product page lists what is in the file and what is not.
Full vehicle files in our catalog include the Toyota Hilux N80, Ford Ranger T6 PX, Toyota Land Cruiser 200, Ford F-150 14th gen and Jeep Gladiator JT. The which file do I need tool narrows the choice by job.
When does measuring by hand work?
For parts that bolt to flat faces you can reach: a winch plate on frame tips, a bracket on a crossmember, a tray on frame rails. A tape, a digital level and a few reference marks give the widths, heights and hole centres you need.
It stops working where the part meets curved bodywork. The gap between a bull bar and the grille, the line of a fender flare or the shape of a bed rail are hard to take off a truck by hand, and an error there shows as a part that does not sit flush. Many builders combine both: a scan file for the shapes, a tape on their own truck for the mounting points.
When is a scanning service worth it?
When your truck is modified (a lift, other bumpers, a tray already fitted), when no file exists for your model, or when you need certified measurement for a production run. A service brings the scanner and the experience, and some deliver a cleaned mesh or a CAD model.
Ask before you book:
- Is the price for scanning only, or does it include processing and a usable mesh?
- Is travel included?
- What file do you get (STL, OBJ, STEP) and in which units?
- Will the underbody be scanned, and will the vehicle be on a lift?
When does buying your own scanner pay off?
When you scan trucks often: a bumper or canopy maker scanning each new model. Handheld scanners sold for automotive work cost about $800 to $1,900 from dealers, and a vehicle scan needs a computer with plenty of memory to merge the data. Expect a learning curve: a whole truck is a big object, and the underbody needs the vehicle raised.
What do the files weigh once you have them?
Whichever way you get a scan, a whole truck is a large file. Our full vehicle STL files run from about 200 MB to about 2 GB; the Hilux N80 full vehicle is 1,958 MB with 39,157,546 triangles. CAD programs slow down with meshes this size, so most designers work on a reduced copy of the area they need and keep the full file as the reference. The STL vs STEP vs OBJ guide explains which format suits which program.
The short version
- Stock truck, file exists: buy the file, check the generation, cab and market, and measure the mounting points on your own truck.
- Modified truck or no file: book a scanning service, or ask us whether we have the truck in our archive.
- Many trucks a year: a handheld scanner can pay for itself.
